I am having an intermittent no start condition, the car will crank but with no attempts to fire. Then, miraculously, it will start as though nothing is wrong at a later point. The same mechanic who diagnosted my CTS failing suggests that a crankshaft position sensor that is intermittent is a good starting point for diagnosing it.
Does anybody know if this is something I can find over here, or is it something that will have to come from a Lada parts place?
Thank You. |

Pretty sure a GM part. Find the wisest GM parts person at your local parts place, and show them the sensor. Though, a GM Tech one should be able to scan it. I'd sooner scan it though, just to be sure. _________________ 1996 Lada Niva - Desert racing edition

The mechanic in question is a neighbor who works at a GM dealership. I'm going to head up to the local carquest tomorrow and see what I can find out.

Standard GM sensor. You sould have no problem getting one.
Check it's clean and the wiring as well. _________________ GadgetBoy

no joy, i went to a local trusted auto parts store and while they agree that the connector is a standard connector the actual sensor is not standard GM. He stated that all the GM sensors mount in the block. I am going to try one other possibility, the sensor says Intellek on it. By googling this, this is a Delphi company. I live in an area with alot of delphi presence and know the head of the steering division, so I am going to see what I can find out.

I've done some looking around and the Crankshaft Position sensor looks very similar to some that are mounted in the block on some Chevrolet 4 cylinders. Don't know for sure yet but If i stumble onto anything i'll let you know. _________________ '96 1.7i Niva Cossack

I am going to give it until tomorrow but if I can't find a cross-reference I will probably have to see about getting one from a Lada vendor.

I finally resolved this today, because I've been busy I haven't fully fixed it. I had a mechanic friend look at it and he gave me a game plan. I used a crank sensor from a '96 S10 and had to enlarge the hole where the original sensor mounted (but it did line up with the original bolt hole) and change the connector on the harness to the same as the S10 but now the setup works perfectly and if I ever have this issue again I will have a readily available replacement.
BTW: The sensor that was originally on the Niva appears to be some strange GM/Lada hybrid that seemingly is not the same as any other US Spec vehicle.
Comparison of both sensors
The enlarged hole
The wiring, line up the colors as shown.
The completed installation

Yes, make sure the wires are the way I show. When I tried it the opposite way it didn't want to run. The only mods are to enlarge the hole and the connector. I found that the Niva connector is not the same as any standard GM connector. This is mostly due to length and the connector. The S10 sensor is the exact same length, just bigger around.
