I have a new-to-me 1986 Lada Niva 1600 that has some serious gas smell when driving it.
I know most older cars have a bit more of an exhaust smell, but this is overpowering, especially after filling up the tank with gas.

I found a hose coming out of the engine that looks like it was severed or cut (i live in nicaragua, so car repairs arent done properly or nicely in general),
When the car is on, it smells like an exhaust hose. I cant tell where the hose is supposed to connect back to, or where that exhaust is supposed to head out. Instead, the hose is about 2 feet long and points right back at the inside of the car blowing the exhaust inside. Can i clamp the hose shut, or where is it supposed to be attached to? It doesnt seem to be part of the exhaust system, which after checking, doesnt appear to be leaking.

From the length it sounds like the vacuum hose for the distrbutor. This goes from below the carb to the side of the distributor.

There are other hoses but none that long.

You can download the workshop/repair manuals for your car from my site:

Its the hose coming out of where the oil dipstick goes in (yes i know, i know very little about cars). Next to the fuel pump

I figure a picture might help better. I pulled the hose up so it shows in the picture better, but otherwise its pointing directly back into the driver.

Ah right. The crankcase breather hose. It goes on the bottom of the air filter housing and no you can't block it off.

As mentioned - check the fuel tank breather lines.
Also check the gasket around the fuel tank level sender. This is under the mat below the back seat.

I have faced with that problem too. It's still an open question for me.
