Okay, so here in California, anything built after (I believe) 1975 has to undergo bi-annual emissions testing.

When it comes to owning classic cars, I've always stuck to stuff before 1968. But if the day comes where I'm ready to pop on a Lada, I know it's going to be somewhat difficult to find a good 2102 or 2101 built before 1976.

So I guess this question is primarily for an CA-based Lada owners, but I'm happy to hear from anyone who has to deal with emissions for registration. How do the Ladas fare?

The usual trick is ......

1. Drive to the test.
2. Lean the carburettor out so the car just runs.
3. Pass test.
4. Adjust carb back to previous settings.

Ha! Okay...so about the same as I'd have to do back before CA's emission laws became what they are now.

Nice to know not much has changed. Very Happy

I was wondering the same thing, as I want to import either a Lada/VAZ 2103 or Volga GAZ-24 to California for my daily driver!
I was initially limiting myself to a pre-1974 car, but since the 2103 was introduced in 1972 and the Volga in 1970, my selection will be limited in comparison with opening my search to cars built up until the early 1980's.
Maybe I ought to try the lean test as well! 😁😁👍👍

I've seen pics of many cars in that Pacific car club CCCP. Maybe one of them will chime in on emissions, but maybe not since Washington state may or may not do those tests. I have seen Nivas being in Cal, so maybe one of them could respond. Like they said lean it out. Lol

There's a '90 model on eBay in California. Rear emblem says Lada 1600. May be a Canadian car. Could ask the buyer about how the emissions fare.
