Hello Everyone!
I'm new to the site, I am a young fan of classic Soviet automobiles and I am considering importing a Lada VAZ 2103 sedan or Volga GAZ-24 sedan to my home here in Los Angeles, California.
I found a dealership on the east coast (Alpha Cars & Ural of New England) that regularly sells vintage Soviet automobiles and offered to help me find my dream car.
However, my concern is the California smog laws. California currently required smog checks for cars built in 1975 and onwards. My initial plan was to search for a 1970-1974 Volga GAZ-24 or 1972-1974 Lada VAZ 2103 sedan, but many of the cars Alpha Cars sells and many of the nice ones for sale on the internet are built after 1975 (for instance, I found a nice 1980 2103 sedan).
What would you all recommend? Have any of you imported a Lada/Volga to California or know how to work around the hurdles?
Incidentally, there is a car I am going to look at here in LA soon and that may be my answer. I just want to have options in case the deal doesn't work out.
Thank you all for your help! ☺️

I had a 60 Impala when I lived in LA, so no smog. You have it right unless you want to attempt smogging a Lada or Gaz. I don't have any idea on the customs situation there, but the DOT and EPA in the rest of the country doesn't seem to care as long as it's 25 or older. Brought in a Lada 2103 and two LuAZs last summer. California has to stick to pre '75 like you said. There are nice specimens that old over there, but beware of rust and multiple owners. Igor (33 Rus) can help for sure.

Check out CCCP club in Seattle, or find one in Russia with my assistance, or pay double at Alpha Cars Very Happy For some reason there is still not a single car dealership in the entire US that would be selling these cars for decent price. Niche is free...
