Hello

My name is Kaspar, and i found your forum through another car forum in Estonia. I've been a Lada enthusiast over 10 years, and in the year 2005 we bought a racing Lada. It's meant for circuit racing only and does it really well. My competition has Honda Civic's, VW Golf's etc.

More about the car:

Engine
Lada Samara or FWD Lada 1500cc engine bored to 1600. Wiseco pistons, PO Racing conrods, stock crankshaft. Head is tuned to the max. Stainless steel valves, massive lift on the cam (12.7mm over 320 degrees). Valve springs from 8 valve formula cars. From this year we also have a dry sump system since the original oilpump failed just after 5 or 10 laps into the race constantly last year. It used to have twin weber carbs, but we opted for Jenvey ITB-s and DTA fully programmable ECU in 2008. Engine makes around 170hj and 170nm of torque.

Gearbox
We used a stock 5-speed but it kept failing so we installed a Ford T9 stock box. It seemed to work for a while, but we changed it still more than we would have liked. A few years ago we ordered a sequential 5-speed from Quaife. Exactly zero problems since.

Drivetrain
Same year we opted for the stock Ford gearbox we changed form the original rear axle to a Volvo 240 unit. It has a LSD diff and final drive ratio went from 3.91 to 4.88.
Brakes in front are Wilwood Dynalite 4-pot, with some Alfa Romeo's ventilated discs. Rear brake calipers are stock Volvo ones, but with a solid Lada front disc.
Suspension is custom fitted coilovers from Nitron. 2-way adjustable and originally designed for a Lotus Elise.

Body
The exterior has had lots of remodelling. Rear doors are welded shut for that coupé look. Rear wings are shaped to mimic some American big coupes (not our work, bought car from a finnish guy. They love old american cars there Smile ). All plexiglass exept front windshield and driver side door. Wet weight without driver is about 900kg.

Had tons of problems geting the car running properly, but finnally figured out that the timing belt was off by one tooth. What a rookie mistake Smile

That sorted out we managed to do one trackday called OpenTrack in Pärnu on our brand new racetrack. I've had the pleasure of driving on it before, when i was a driving intructor for Toyota Baltic when they introduced the amazing GT86. But the Lada is a completely different animal. We did 43 laps all together. I would have wanted to drive twice as much, but it started to rain so i only got 30 laps on dry track. We didn't bring any wet slick so i had to skid around the track on full slicks. It wasn't that bad and i managed to take the top spot in the rain.

Here are the timesheets:
Dry track
Wet track
Tire markings: T - road tire, TS - road legal semi slick, S - slicks.

A small story (sorry it's in estonian, but the pictures are still worth to check out) of the weekend in car blog, that me and my mates are running - OpenTrack 36

Also some pics from the weekend

What a fantastic car. Thanks for sharing. I see a Lotus Seven style car in some of those pictures too.

Thanks.

It's a Lotus 7 replica produced in Estonia. It's named appropriately ESTfeild. We've owned it since 2002, when we bought two kits and built them ourselves. One for our family and the other for my uncles. At first they were powered by stock Lada 2106 motor and tranny, but we swapped ours for a Samara engine and Ford T9 gearbox with Volvo 240 rear axle. Basically it's got the same setup than our race car, with less power of course. Dual Dellorto 40 carbs and a sharper camshaft. It does around 100hp @ the wheels. Unfortunately the crank broke into two pieces earlier this year and we left it like that. Let's see whats what later.

A few updates. We ordered new front brake calipers to imporve braking. They're the same Wilwood Dynalites, but with larger pistons. The old calipers and discs will be mounted to the rear axle. New discs will be race spec and mounted straight on the hub. We will have new hubs milled from aluminum with the necessary mounting points.

Calipers are already in our garage and we also recieved the LDC dispaly we ordered for the dash. No more analog gauges for us Smile

Heres a small video to prove it moves Smile

New LCD display

nice car and pics! are the yellow headlights french made?-know they used to use yellow tinted headlights in france. I considered making a Ron Champion style"locost" lotus 7 replica using 1987 2107 parts;the lada parts were acually quite similar to the british ford escort recommended as the parts donor for the "locost".The OHC lada engine was a bit taller than the small OHV ford "kent" engine though.

Sorry, no French headlights. I found some clear yellow vinyl and made them myself. But considering your locost, i'd stay away from Lada parts. For a reliable locost you'd be better of with Ford parts for sure. Ladas build quality and parts quality is way too variable too make a fun locost. You'll end up repairng it 24/7.

Drum roll please.

Finally got to race the Lada again. Managed to secure 2nd place in qualifying and got fourth place in both races in some pretty tough competition. I was the only 1600 driver, all others were either 2.0 or bigger.

Here is a montage of my weekend

Had a few more races this year, but also had some technical issues. The electric water pump failed to meet our expectations and we swapped it for a standard unit. For no apparent reason our brand new water pump started to leak and the engine overheated. We blew the head gasket and bent the head a little bit too. So after some major engine works we got the car running again and managed to finish first overall in our local championship. So I became an Estonian champion in BalticOpen class in 2013. Smile Well done Lada.
